Traveling overland in West Africa can be a rewarding adventure, but navigating the visa process is crucial. Countries like Morocco, Senegal, and Gambia offer visa-free entry for many travelers, while others, including Nigeria and Guinea, require embassy visits or online applications. This list simplifies the info I gathered during my trip and provides essential tips for obtaining visas in West Africa down below. Staying informed about changing visa requirements and using reliable resources can help travelers avoid setbacks and focus on the beauty and culture of the region. Whether you're cycling, overlanding by car or motorbike, proper preparation is key to a smooth journey.

Country-by-Country Overview for West and South of Africa (traveling north to south):

  1. Morocco, free, not required for most nationalities.
  2. Mauritania, €55, I applied for the visa directly at the border.
  3. Senegal, free, not required for most nationalities.
  4. Gambia, free, not required for most nationalities.
  5. Guinea-Bissau, €32, I applied and received the visa at the embassy in Zinguinchor, Senegal.
  6. Guinea, €82, I applied for the visa online a couple of weeks before.
  7. Sierra Leone, €82, I got the visa at the embassy in Conakry, Guinea.
  8. Liberia, $120, I got the visa at the embassy in Conakry, Guinea.
  9. Ivory Coast, €80, I got the visa at the embassy in Conakry, Guinea.
  10. Ghana, CFA40.000, at embassy in Abidjan or $200, so called emergency visa at the land border with Ivory Coast.
  11. Togo, €54, I applied for the visa online.
  12. Benin, €50, I applied for the visa online.
  13. Nigeria, Approx. €150, I got the visa at the embassy in Cotonou.
  14. Cameroon, €166, I applied for the visa online (sticker collected in Abuja).
  15. Congo (Brazzaville), €123, I got the visa at the embassy in Cotonou.
  16. Angola, free, 1 month tourist visa, stamp at the land border with Congo, no applications needed.
  17. Namibia, free, 3 months tourist visa for Europeans (approx. €80 from 1st of April, 2025 - new regulations coming!)
  18. South Africa, free, 3 months tourist visa for Europeans.
